It's still best to check the codes. Example: My wife's 9-5 threw a CEL. Pulling the codes I knew it was the coolant temp sensor. But guess what? The temp gauge is working normally.
I clear the code and the fault comes back, but the gauge still works normally. And does 95% of the time for the 3 months it took for me to get around to fixing the problem. I'd erase the fault and it would come right back, but the gauge continued to work correctly. It would stop working for a day or two, then suddenly work again.
If you're doing diagnosis, pull the code, unless you just like throwing parts, time and money at the car. Would a professional tech just see the CEL and assume it's the DI?
