Trying to change the valve cover gasket, Have an Elring gasket waiting, but cannot get it to stay there as I flip the thing over - thought I had some grease to use somewhere but alas, no.
QUESTIONS: Should I just use grease or do I need some sealant/adhesive, If so, what should I get? Is Loctite RTV Red (silicon) OK? It really is just to hold the damn thing there while you flip it over and affix.
The reason I tend to think I need sealant after having been happy to use nothing or just grease is that to my novice's eye it seems like the gasket has a LOT of space to fill in that channel. Maybe I am wrong and it will fill out OK....???
It seems the last guy used some black bulletproof stuff and it took much more effort than I expected to get it off.)
Very happy to see zero evidence of sludge in the top even after all these miles - I know dropping the pan is far more conclusive proof of overall health but hey, it looks good. I'm happy.
In the process of removal the PVC nipple broke (DAMN). I know I can drive it a handful of miles to the local parts place or dealer to get one.
Anyway, I would appreciate your suggestions very much.
