Get a tube of Anaerobic sealant. Sometimes called Loctite or Permatex 518. This is a transparent red sealer (looks similar to Automatic trans fluid, but a lot more viscous).
Use it sparingly to hold the rubber in place on the valve cover as you install the valve cover. A thin coating on the whole gasket should suffice.
Yes, it will expand to fill the channel as you tighten the bolts.
