2001 has about 138,000, the 2004 has maybe 148,000 miles on the original water pump but neither shows any sign of failure. The 2001 has had a new fuel pump; the 2004 a new alternator.
The best explanation I can offer is, my cars have done lots and lots of high speed cruising; therefore in hours of operation they're both pretty young. I would imagine creeping around, commuting, stuck in traffic can't be easy on water pumps - if there was a way we could measure car use in hours of operation and not miles or kms.
