It might not be the timing chain but the balance chain. If so, not much can be done cheaply.
If you spend money rolling in a new timing chain and it is in fact the balance chain that makes the noise, your engine is still as vulnerable as it was before the timing chain job.
I had a new customer moving in from New York 6 years ago with a 99 9-5 and when I lifted the valve cover to replace cylinder head bolts and saw the timing chain being in a horrible state, worn in such a weird way that the rollers started to lean sideways over the sprockets, I couldn't leave it alone but rolled in a new timing chain.
Even though the timing chain was now fresh, the clattering noise was still there and has been there for 6 years and 40K miles and I warn them every visit that at any point and time, that balance chain will fail and take out the engine.
