When you have the whole engine apart to rebuild, it could be beneficial to actually plug the oil ports and remove shaft.
I haven't done that myself and am not quite sure where and how they are plugged.
The risk of leaving shafts in place when the whole engine is apart is if in fact the balance shaft bearings are worn to the point where they allow enough oil to squirt by that would lower the oil pressure overall.
When doing a quickie removal of chain from below you don't have that option to mull over and if the engine is in fact that worn, you have more problems to deal with than to just remove a balance chain.
And that's kind of the deal with this particular engine I mentioned above and why I don't even want to try to remove the chain.
I didn't really expect it to last 40K more miles the way it sounds.
