The early 2.3L engines had very bad chain problems, which was ultimately traced back to inadequate chain supplier. Difficult to track, because it was the same chain supplier they'd used, but the balance shaft engine somehow pushed the chain requirements just enough to cause problems. Anyway...
What would happen is the chain would wear just enough that instead of rolling smoothly into the sprocket, it would impact the tooth. That impact would greatly accelerate the rate of chain wear, and also result in sprocket wear. Ultimately the chain would break.
A rattling chain could be from several causes, but it could be resulting in a massively increased chain wear rate. It really needs to be attended to, IMO.
