It is NOT camber that causes cupping, it is toe in.
What is toe in? Well if the tires are going straight ahead they have 0 degrees of toe in [or toe out] If the tires are pointed in you have toe in. If they are pointed out you have toe out. This is easily adjusted on the Saab 95 rear suspension. the front of the rear trailing arm is adjustable with slots that allow adjustment.
I had this problem several years ago and fixed it with spring spacers and proper adjustment.
Camber is the leaning in at the top which is negative camber. 0 Camber is if the tire is vertical. Positive camber is if the tire leans out at the top. Negative camber DOES NOT CAUSE CUPPING. You do not need shims in all likelihood.
TOE IN AND TOE OUT CAUSE CUPPING!
I have lots of camber on the back end of my Porsche. That is normal. The tires wear more on the inside, but that is normal and does not lead to cupping.
Ride height is important because when the suspension is compressed the toe in increases and the camber increases. the increased toe has caused your cupping.
OK to put different number of spacers side to side.
You should fix the ride height with spacers or new springs.
Then get a a good 4 wheel alignment from someone that knows what they are doing. My guy in Canoga Park does not use computers but is an experienced old school guy.
If your mechanic wants to put in shims to correct cupping, my guess is that he does not know about toe and does not know how to fix it.
Experience? I fixed my 2001 95 Aero 8 years ago. My wife's 2003 Aero 5 years ago, my son's 2004 Aero wagon 3 months ago. He had terrible toe out when he bought this car and the worse cupping I have ever seen.
And my other son's 2001 Aero wagon 10 months ago. Spacers and proper alignment and in some cases new shocks.
I got 20,000 miles out of set of tires with bad toe on my car. I just put new tires on it yesterday and got 54,000 miles out of set of Michelins. Have 188,540 on the 2001 95 Aero.
I hope this helps.
