Is the cylinder popping up completely when this happens Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 14 May 2014 17:13:30 In Reply to: ignition switch/headlights stay on, Fritz, Wed, 14 May 2014 14:56:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The ignition sits atop the auxiliary switch inside the console. If the ignition switch is not popping upwards completely when the key is removed then you have a dirty ignition cylinder. Replacing the cylinder (~$60), or cleaning it will cure this problem.
If the ignition cylinder is popping up all the way then the problem is a sticky auxiliary switch beneath the cylinder. I believe this switch is costlier to replace.
Do not try to use WD40 to clean the cylinder as it will only remove all lock cylinder lubrication and leave you with a bigger problem. Remove the ignition cylinder and soak it in diesel fuel or other light oil to clean and lubricate it.
