Dropped the oilpan and virtually no sludge. Pan was VERY clean. So I re-replaced the oil pressure switch.
I have three observations - 1) the pan virtually fell down as I loosened the bolts, and this might be part of the slight oil leak that I had attributed to my oil pressure switch; 2) even with a pan that looked new and nothing in the screen I saw a few (8-10) little bits of carbon, which I attribute to the turbo oil seal (turbine/exhaust side) starting to
carbonize oil - I rebuilt the turbo earlier because I'm owner number 2, and though everyone says TD04's have a pretty good record, I didn't have quite the documents I'd like on previous owner's oil changes; 3) The hardest part of the job was lowering the exhaust - I had to double-nut the bottom stud on the exhaust flange to remove it because the catalyst hit the mounting plate for the lower transmission mount (5-spd Auto).
Special thanks to Saabmedic for a plan of what I would do if it was really bad (slip in new bearing shells). And I will be returning the UK-made oil pickup screen I bought to eEuroparts (their return policy is very fair) because it is horribly made compared to original. About 35% of the
screen is actually blocked with sloppy brazing and flux without ever being used.
