I had similar symptoms for awhile. Could never track down the source. Then one day the fuel pump died and left wife stranded at dog park. New fuel pump got the car going again AND cured the original symptoms.
A good tech can check fuel pump by looking at the power draw on a scope. Dropouts in the power draw point to a bad pump. Fuel pressure at the injector rail can also be checked.
Re CPS - it can also be tested with a multimeter.
Both procedures can be found on this board. I know Swedecar posted these some time back - a little google-fu could be your friend.
