If the system is empty just charge in the proper amount by weight using a scale, assuming that a multiple of the can size doesn't yield the correct amount.
If trying to top up an undercharged system the right way to do it when a variable-displacement compressor is involved is to fully evacuate the system and charge in the correct amount. As others have pointed out, these systems are very sensitive to even a small amount of undercharge or overcharge.
I have had decent success topping up this type of system though. This was done by slowly charging in a little refrigerant at a time and letting the system run a bit to stabilize, then checking the result. Repeat as needed and stop when the outlet temperature is OK. This is not ideal, of course, but it worked. (This was not on a Saab, but on a friend's "Brand X" car equipped with variable-displacement compressor. Your mileage may vary!)
