The OE wagon hitch in the USA for my '02 is class III, rated at 3500 lb. braked trailer, 1000 lb. unbraked. In England, the same hitch is rated 1800 KG (3960 lb.) It reinforces the bumper rail attachment to the rear frame rails through prepared reinforced tubes, although you do need to drill out some sheet metal, as well as to the reinforced plate under the spare tire well. The instructions call for removing the bumper, inserting the mounting pieces, reinstalling the bumper and marking the attachment, removing the bumper and drilling the attachment, then reinstalling again. Me, I just measured the hole spacing on the body and drilled the attachment in the proper places - worked fine.
One of the more - er - interesting steps is to insert a nut into a deep and small recess, then bolt up to it. Or was it to insert the bolt into the recess? Has it really been 12 years? Anyway, a short piece of hose slipped over the bolt or nut is one way to do it. Once the threads are engaged you can get a wrench in.
