The only thing you want to know is the difference between front and rear of the tire.
So you find a deep groove in the front of tire thread (as high as car frame allows) where you can hook the tape measure into and then find the same groove on the other tire and take a reading. Then you move the tape measure to the back and do the same and see what the length difference is between front and rear of tire.
That is basically the Toe-In/Toe-Out.
It's crude but it shows if something is really out of whack.
