Yup, short of having a donor car, tools, and lots of time, you are probably better off finding another newer one used. Saab 9-5's are dirt cheap at the moment, so you can get a much newer car for about the cost of paying someone to put a new engine in. I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage in a newer 9-5 so long as the maintenance has been done carefully. You may want to look for something different anyway, but if you have really liked the 9-5, there's no reason to shy away from a newer one, particularly 2004 and newer. The pcv problems were sorted out by then and the turbo is much more robust. More power, better handling also.
If the old one is in fantastic shape, and if you don't plan to part it out yourself, consider selling it cheaply to a SAAB fan with mechanical skills and it may be reincarnated and back on the road. Donating a good condition car straight to the crusher is a waste of good parts. This might not be on the radar yet for some 9-5 folks, but if you go over to the c900 bb (or other vintage cars), an appreciation for the value of parts cars, junk yard cars etc it evident! Some parts are NLA.
