In your situation, you probably are wise to find something that works better for you. Heck, I'm young and there are days I notice the "lowness" getting into the car. There is no sense making your life difficult!
If you can sell it to a SAAB enthusiast though, you should. You will probably get more money for it that way. 2005 was a good year, and especially if the rest of the car is in good condition, at 72k it is still a baby and in no way needs to be turned into a parts car. The going rate for one of those is maybe $4-6k. You could look on the classifieds here (or better yet advertise it there). Many of us are driving older 9-5's with double the miles that still feel like new cars and could do the same to yours with little effort.
Beyond that - is your mechanic a SAAB mechanic? I don't think I've ever heard of one of these breaking a spring (they sag, but never heard of them breaking), and if so, springs are cheap new (but dirt cheap and better to buy used). If he claims it will cost $3800 to fix this, it really sounds like he is trying to soak you and I would not give him my business. This is very routine work for a tech, and parts are not that costly.
good luck!
