It's not quite that simple that it only activates in LO. It starts to happen earlier too all depending on outside/inside temperature and the temp dialed in.
What many forget in this discussion is that hoses also goes bad. It will come a time when the heater hose with the 90° bend at cylinder head blows up and when that happens, you are stranded anyway.
The upper radiator hose and the heaterhose with the 90° bend are the first to go from age, and replacing the valve alone will not help that matter.
The plastic Y-pipe in that heater hose package on later cars will also wither away and break.
Installing a new hose kit will take care of several problem spots.
Also, what I have found out lately is that this fantastic valve is not even doing what it is suppose to do, shut off the hot coolant.
It is so poorly manufactured that when you activate it, it will bleed hot coolant through and still keep the heater core hot.
