YOU MAY HAVE AN ADDITIONAL PROBLEM Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Sun, 15 Feb 2015 13:08:35 In Reply to: H7 Headlight wiring repair, MI-Roger [Profile/Gallery] , Sun, 15 Feb 2015 05:29:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you are using a 100W versus 55W bulb this could be the primary cause of the problem you're having. The 100W bulb is drawing approximately 8.3 - 9.66 amps compared to 4.6 - 5.4 amps for the stock 55W bulb. The higher current flow would generate more heat in the headlight circuit causing disintegration of the the H7 bulb socket as you experienced. You may be setting the stage for wiring or headlight control relay failure at some point in the future. Unfortunately, failure will occur under load when you are using the lights because it is dark.
The above is a brief review of why using 100W H7 bulbs versus 55W may lead to problems. A heavy duty circuit can be fitted, not as a wiring replacement but rather a separate fused circuit including a relay operated by the existing plus feed to the headlight.
