[SORRY--I'm THE ORIGINAL POSTER AND HAD BROWSER PROBLEMS SO THE LAST POST ATTEMPT WENT ANONYMOUS. FIXED NOW.]
I should have clarified: while the 9-5 was originally imported to Canada, I now own it (used), free and clear in the U.S.A. There should be no problem with any DRL compliance here.
Now then. . . .
I agree with VIKINGMAN saying that the DRLs are indeed running at lower current than lowbeams--and I'm not opposed to having them on that way all day long.
All I really want is a means to kill ALL headlights when parking at night, since I back into a garage directly across from a neighbor's living room window. That's the considerate part of me thinking.
I know that the (don't laugh) Catera has a kill switch ("Lights Off") which seems odd knowing that the same style of 9-5 three-position rotary switch is right above it. But I think that the kill switch exists exactly for my situation.
Final question: Does anyone know for sure that I could modify the 9-5 setup (via Tech 2 or otherwise) so that the "OFF" position with the three-position rotary switch indeed kills all the lights, even the DRLs? That would be preferable to a wired-in solution, I'm sure . . . I just can't imagine how it would work and be able to distinguish between low-current DRLs and the full-power lowbeams in the "ON" position. (Hence my original post suggesting a physical cutoff switch wired in place of fuse 35--not through the firewall, but just on the far left side of the dash and mere inches away from those spare switch holes, where most dealers would never even notice it).
Thanks again!
