Going much past 250HP, you run into tire wear problems. The Achilles Heel of any FWD car is how much power can be pushed through the front wheels. In a straight line, its not so different (though you do have weight shift issues), but once things get twisty, tires really don't like having to turn the car and accelerate it at the same time.
Then, there is how robust can you make the transmission? Ask anyone who worked on Classic 900s in the '80s what all the issues were with those transmissions, which were all based on a design for a 110 HP non-turbo. It took until 1990 to have a transmission that could stand up to only 160HP...
