Heater box and other fun... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Thu, 28 May 2015 19:26:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Spent my Memorial Day weekend swapping the heater box on my 2000 SE Sedan. Quite a lot of work, but only a few difficult operations.
Took me the best part of three days, but that was working fairly leisurely, and most of day 2 was taken up by the disconnecting, unbolting , re-bolting, and re-connecting the old and "new" heater boxes. Working space is tight behind the V6, though not nearly as tight as a 4 cylinder, I'm told. Still, its in an awkward to get at place.
The only other difficult operation was bolting the passenger airbag safety strap onto the backside of the crossbeam. hard to see up in there.
Another sticky point was the connector for the alarm LED that was clipped onto the dashboard, preventing removing the dashboard...
And thanks to this board, my brake lights and cruise control switches are in the right spots!
Best tool: 1/4" drive powered screwdriver. Made quick work of the hundred or so (I exaggerate, but not by much...) T25 TORX® screws.
Worst single operation: getting heater hoses off of the heater box after they've been there for 15 years.
Once it was all back together, and I re-connected the battery, I was only a little surprised that it started up like nothing happened. Only thing I missed was the connector for the door lock switch in the console. Took care of that today, finally.
I also swapped out the wiper mechanism, as this past winter took its toll, when I started the car without checking the wipers were off before scraping ice off the windshield.
This operation is pretty straightforward, save for the pulling of the wiper arms. Note: The tool Eeuro sells will NOT work... It doesn't center up on the bolt. I had to use a pittman arm puller my buddy had.
Anyway, I hope that's the last time I ever have to replace something that is that deep inside a car's dash. It really is the first part they hang on the hook, and build the car around...
