When the computer thinks that the engine isn't warming up as it should, it drives the gauge to zero (L) to alert you. Eventually it also triggers a check engine light. What you'll find first is that it shows "L", then you stop and restart and all of a sudden it shows normal temperature.

Probably you need a new thermostat, possibly a new temperature sensor.
