Test for a T-stat that will not close.
Cold engine, hood up.
Start and let idle to warm up.
Good thermostat: Upper rad hose stays cold as engine warms then gets hot suddenly when the thermostat opens. If temp indicator reads low when engine is hot, the problem is the thermistor temp sender or the connector. Try reseating the connector.
Open Stat: Rad hose gets warm slowly as the engine gets warm.
When doing the thermostat, consider replacing an old heater bypass valve.
