US spec. Driver's side near the thermostat housing. Halfway between where the upper radiator hose and the smaller hose going to the heater control valve attach to the block. Should be black sensor with a blue connector.
On our 2003 Aero had similar symptoms. Wife left for work and temp gauge dropped to low and I think she got a CEL. I switched cars with her and drove it home. Installed a new temp sensor and it solved the problem. If it doesn't fix it then you can go for the thermostat replacement.
