Tailgate lift support issue

I've been testing aftermarket lift supports made by AVM Industries (StrongArm 6383 or Mighty Lift E96383). I've had them on one 9-5 for nearly two years. They lift fine, but differently than the OEM Stabilus (at least the worn out ones). Perhaps the difference is due to a different lifting force spec. Specs below. The tailgate doesn't tend to self-lift to the same extent.
I've just put a second set on another 9-5. This time things seem worse. When I open the hatch quickly, the support is grabby as if it's resisting the opening. Then, the motion isn't totally smooth. AVM says they will improve as they wear in which can take some time. I'm skeptical, but as it's not critical I can wait to warranty.
Is it possible this is due to not adding more grease to the ball pivots. I wasn't sure what grease to use so I reused whatever was still there. AVM thought it's not due to the balls.
As I might be redoing this, what grease is correct for these ball pivots? Is the idea to use a very light coating? I don't want any to get on the headliner.
