Use and weather variations I suppose. Also, some were replaced at earlier signs of failure (poor cold lifting or leak from the cylinder). I ran one until the door would fall. That's potentially dangerous and preferably avoided.
Could the quality control vary that widely? Seems not given that the replacements haven't lasted. Hoping for longevity was the motivation to test something else.
The hood lifts go too, but last longer than the tailgate on my cars.
OEM seems to provide smoother motion. Perhaps it's better designed or better matched to the car.
