I have had Too much experience with chains . As a truck driver and living in the mountains most of my life , Chains are just a part of a regular daily routine . Survival isn't any fun , and tire chaining must be done correctly or you risk life/injury . On the West Coast & Rockies ,most places have "chain up " areas , where everybody pulls over and slaps on the metal . Usually there's a foot of slush and traffic chaos , with the "All wheel drivers " spinning past . This is the worst place to learn about chains .Although there is usually somebody there to help you . {$ tips ..} Tahoe has enough traffic , you won't be alone .
Practice in your driveway first . To make the first fitting , take off a roadwheel and get the chain on right . Note the different notches in the cables , and the direction . Wear some good protective gloves , and I really recommend a Jumpsuit or bib overalls as well . A head mounted flashlight is great too !
Then try putting the chain on with the car in the driveway . Be okay with the fact that the chains don't tighten up at first , but they must ride evenly . Then tighten them up and drive a bit , slowly . Tighten them up and go slowly . Once you start going past the "chain up point " ,you do not want to stop ! And if you block traffic , don't expect a warm greeting from the all wheel idiots or the Truckers .
The sizes variable because the chains are multifit and adjustable . Best thing is to ask someone who can inspect the fit , tire stores or indy's .
There isn't much clearance on the 9-5 , esp if the snow is tacky !
Search the YouTube for DIY videos .
Then in the real world , after you get through the Pass , plan on "unchaining " and dealing with the chains afterwards , that is the real mess ! If they are salty , be sure to rinse them and dry them , and wrap em up neatly for the next time !
Maybe I will have my wife video me when I take my 9-5 over Washington's Snoqualamie Pass . It is regular chain season this year !
Be Careful !
