Yeah it is a little bit sad about all the V6 bashing on this board when the 4 banger really don't have anything more to offer in reliability unless you mean the old "real" 4 bangers from mid 80s to mid 90s.
Everyone is talking about the scary timing belt even though it might be 10 years or so we heard about them failing and I haven't seen one in a long, long time.
The biggest problem was that Saab did not know what they had and maybe GM did not know either even after years of running the same/similar V6 engine.
That stupid decision to replace the timing belt for free at 60K service but not including the pulleys was a disaster since those old worn pulleys was suddenly tighten up with a new belt overheating the near empty of grease bearings.
It probably would have been much better to run the old belt to 90 or 100K as in the Saturn engine and then replace the whole kit.
Have you replace the positive battery cable? That might be one reason for the alternators and batteries due to overheated lug ring. It is not a fun job on a V6 but neither is the starter.
