When you say intermittent alarm, do you mean it sounds off intermittently, usually at inconvenient hours of the night, or that it only works intermittently.
If the former, it's more likely the siren batteries dying, although this is usually accompanied by SERVICE THEFT ALARM in the SID. Search the board for ways to replace or bypass the module - its inside the left front wheel well, behind the liner on the nose side of the wheel well.
If not, maybe door, hood, or trunk switches are getting flaky?
At any rate, if your positive cable is original, it's worth giving it a closer look. Mine went from long cranks before starting and battery not completely charging on short trips to starting consistently in seconds, with very bright lights and just seeming more reliable all around. Feels like it completely rejuvenated the car.
