After seeing the cause of it on several 9-3 by now, I don't believe in GMs explanation of dirt build up that can be cleaned with fuel additives. I think it was another Hail Mary to maybe get the cars over the warranty line.

Since the tank has to be dropped and your mileage, I would go for a new fuel pump assembly even though you could replace just the sending unit since it is the same between the 9-3 and 9-5 of those years p/n 22672171

EPC does not list a sending unit option though for the 9-5.

The good news is that Saab has dropped the 9-5 fuel pump from $973.00 to $450.00 so it is not worth it trying to fiddle in a 9-3 pump as some has done.
