Especially the 9-3SS. For the 9-5s, IMO you get a smidgen of corrosion on the resistance wire, which at the very top of its range never gets a proper "wipe" from float contact. It reads "high resistance" which is interpreted as "no gas". Back in the day the light had its own contacts, but since like forever the computer reads the fuel sender and sets the light when it feels like it.
My '02 did that for years until I had the fuel pump insert replaced, and when it went back together it was fine. I'm guessing the shop cleaned the fuel sender while it was out.
