Thanks Stephen, you were right on.
I went back and checked, and the voltage potential on that pin was ~.5 volts compared to the "car body ground".
Measuring the voltage on the other (legit 12v) pins using that ground pin read a potential of 11.<something> volts. That is obvious now ... it would read a potential of roughly 12 -.5. To the casual observer (me on some days) seeing 11.<something> flash on the screen is enough to declare it as OK.
So it was tricky. casual testing seemed to indicate the pins were good. But checking continuity between that ground pin and "car body ground" showed very high resistance. That ground pin was not grounded but it was close enough to serve as floating ground for measuring the other power pins.
Shame on me ... after so many years with Saabs I should have known to suspect a bad ground first!
