The green cap is not the AC port -- it is for servicing the Evap system. See Anders post in the link attached.
The coolant message appears when the system is low or if there is a signal interrupted from the sensor (which is integral to the reservoir).
I would start by making sure the float in the reservoir is moving freely. Maybe clean the reservoir out. Make sure that the wire connector to the sensor on the underside of the reservoir is clean and attached tightly.
