I've done my cabin filter three times. It's a chore. An electric screwdriver with a "wiggler" extension helps quite a bit. I'm not a big guy so I don't really have to do a lot of SAAB yoga in the process. IMO the cabin filter on a BMW e36 is a little more challenging and is in the same place, only the access door is smaller and you to break the filter frame into three pieces as it goes in. They got smart on the e46 and it's beneath a cover just beneath the windshield. That change made a 45 minute job into a 45 second job.
My most challenging DIY job to date was the AC line that runs from the dryer to a junction just behind the passenger headlight, along the cross member beneath the radiator. You've gotta remove the right headlight and the cooling fan. There's a single piece of rubber section in that line about 8" long that lets you bend it just so to install it from beneath, just along side the accessory drive belts. That bit of leger du main is like figuring out one of those bar puzzles with the interlocking shapes that you have to separate. Not intuitive, and not for the beginner.
