It may well be only the speaker. How long has this been going on? If it has been slowly going bad over a long time, and the vital functions are all still there, it increases the odds that the car will be fine even when it stops all together. One of the '06's I maintain had this happen - but not just softened sounds, it had NO sound at all.
I had no guarantee it was only the speaker, and I had no clear source for a drop-in (solder-in) replacement speaker. Of course I did not want to remove the dash, remove the instrument panel, and then wait while I tried to replace a speaker I could not spec until I did the take-apart. It seemed too likely to end up with a car out of commission for a long while.
So I ordered a whole new SID unit from Speedparts Sweden. It went in fine, I had it married to the car via Tech2, and all has been good. If I had repaired the old SID with a new speaker, it would not have required the Tech2, so a double savings.
I attached my old thread on replacing and re-programming. Hope this gives you some insight.
