People are talking as though water pumps fail regularly on the iron block four. That's not been my experience at all.
I have four 9-5s, all fours, all high output turbos, with 93,000, with 177,000, with 201,000 and 225,000 miles and none have had their original water pumps replaced. Not only that, but we have two new generation 900s with in excess of 200,000 miles each and they're on their original pumps also.
So, to me this notion that all the motors tend to mandate a water pump replacement, is doubtful. I am on the Southerly side of the Mason Dixon - I suppose this may be a factor in my good fortune.
I also find the 4 cylinder versions handle far better, without that excess weight in the front of the car. I did some heavy shopping, picking up these last two 9-5s and I see many V-6s laid up or available very cheap. I find the fours are much more sought after - i think there's a real reason this is so.
