In all fairness, I doubt very much that water pumps fail any more often with the V6 than they do with the 4.
HOWEVER, failure of the water pump (as in leakage) may lead to the timing belt jumping a tooth, or worse.
So, purely as a prevention, I replace the water pump every 60k along with the timing belt and pulleys. It's really cheap insurance (<$60 from eSaabParts), since it takes 90% of the same labor it takes to replace the timing belt and pump to replace the pump alone.
And every other few timing belt changes, I'll change out the thermostat.
The "Slipped" timing belt happened to my late mechanic. He changed the timing belt on his own car (1st time apart), the water pump almost immediately gave out, so he replaced that (2). He noticed it wasn't running "quite right", pulled it apart again, and installed another new belt to put it back to the right timing (3).
