Good idea about practicing on a wreck. I wish I could find one around here -- the only self-service junkyard in the area closed last year, but I bet I can find something. I'm being overly cautious about this but I learned from experience removing the center console from my Miata. There are 4-5 visible screws, easy to remove. The you start to pull the panel off and the cracking sound reveals the two hidden screws, still holding the plastic tabs you just broke.
I think that black plastic trim piece holds moisture and over the years it's started rusting. Most of the pieces are still flush, but I can see one part bulging out, with rust under it. I want to keep this car forever so this Spring is search-and-destroy rust time. I'm about to fix the doglegs for the third time, too.
