Brake light switch--Christmas tree lights culprit?

My 2004 9-5 Arc wagon has had the intermittent Christmas tree lights on the dash since I bought it three years ago, mostly during hot weather. The lights came on a couple days ago, though, and have stayed on. The speedometer is still working normally.
Looking through posts here, sounds like I should start with the brake light switch first. I've found plenty of posts complaining about how much of a bear removing it is, but no good explanation for how to do this. Can someone walk me through it?
And based on the symptoms my car is experiencing, any other ideas what it could be? Time for an ABS rebuild?
Thanks much
Charlie
