I used a utility knife, so there was no kerf, so no material went missing.
I was able to get some pieces of all-thread and the proper diameter sockets to press the pieces out and in.
Hope this helps... I might do this on my '06 just because I know how big a difference it makes. (I did it on my '03 at about 160K. My '06 has 52K on it, but it is 13 years old and there's a bit of play in the steering noticeable at slow speeds.)
