This is part of the reason I drive a BMW e46. Cabin filter change takes less than two minutes. Wife and son have 9-5s. The foam on the top can be a hassle as can the large electrical connectors above the "slot". I bought an electric screwdriver just for doing all ten screws. It's a silly design. I did teach my son do it. To teach is to learn twice.
My daughter's BMW e36 isn't much better than a 9-5, you actually have to break the plastic filter frame in three places as you install it. If you don't, it doesn't fit!
