On some aftermarket filters, you have to do some plastic trimming to facilitate installation. The top foam around the ac lines tend to stay in, I leave it there rather than install new ones. I vacuum the inside of the housing of all loose debris. I use a mirror to ensure everything looks right before I attempt to install the filter. I rarely have serious issues anymore but it doesn't get easier with age.
