started having trouble some even using the ON then START method and more KEY NOT ACCEPTED messages so did more digging on this site and found the trick to push the unlock the doors from the fob while key in START position. and discussions around the key electronics in the head going bad. Sure enough the fob unlock worked perfectly so I switched to my other key and haven't had a miss start yet. so far it seems the culprit of all this is likely the electronics in the key head. strange though that it would still start the car most times on 2nd try to START or going to ON for a couple seconds then START would work almost all the time until near the end. maybe this will also help someone else down the road so wanted to get it on record. thanks for everyone's help and so glad it's looking like I won't have to replace the starter or TWICE!
