Exactly right.
Knocked out of position can put the thermistor end too close to a hot surface, causing the high readings (which will confuse the HVAC system)
Failed sensor (or more commonly broken brittle connector wire) will manifest as dashes (---) in the temperature display. This causes the ACC to think that the outside temp it some crazy LOW (like -40C) temperature outside, and cranks the heat up. I discovered that one hot humid August day a few years back.
