Voltage fluctuating HIGH at startup - need help Posted by Mark in Marine [Email] (#1837) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mark in Marine) on Sat, 27 Jun 2020 16:33:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The patient is my daughter's 2006 wagon (Sport package). The symptom she first described to me was that her headlights cycle bright/dim for a minute or two after starting the car from 'cold' (but with temps in the 70's F).
She has halogen headlights, so this is not normal. I have measured the voltage at the battery while it does this, and it is fluctuating from 14V to >15V and back. As the car warmed up, the voltage stabilized at a more normal 14.3V or so, and the headlights steadied.
What else beside a failing regulator would cause this ? I cannot find anything in WIS that describes control of the excitation voltage by the ECM - do 2006 9-5's do that ? I have a rebuilt alternator on the shelf, but I don't want to do the job if I haven't done a good enough job of ruling out other causes
Thanks in advance. Resting battery voltage was 12.37V
