It does sound like you're dealing with a leak or leaks rather than a problem in the complex electronics.
You're not supposed to vent refrigerant into the atmosphere. It really should be recovered with recycling equipment, otherwise there are stiff fines if caught. Of course if it's already vented itself due to leaks that's not an issue. (Though realistically over time it's all going to wind up in the atmosphere anyway due to leaks, accidents, and equipment failure.)
I'm not sure how good the cheapie electronic detectors are. Mine is a fairly high-end Matco sniffer that was given to me. (It's an older unit but still works well.) It's possible the the cheap ones work OK when new but don't last as long and are not as sensitive as the better-made and more expensive units. Your leak sounds fast enough that you wouldn't need a super-sensitive detector to find it if the dye doesn't do the trick.
