Just wanted to post an update in case anyone happens to experience the same issue.
Yesterday, the ABS, TCS, Brake, and triangle came on (no SID message displayed) and are staying on now - they will come on a few seconds after the car is started even before driving, so I'm concluding that the 'phantom' alerts are related.
I'm hoping it's not the ABS module and rather either the brake switch or the issue with the wiring junction described here:

This might be my excuse to invest in a Tech2 clone.
