I think it varies depending upon how and where the car is driven and how it is washed to remove the salt residue. In any case, an upper Midwest car will always have more corrosion than a southern car or NW car. I find a couple of photos of the rear end behind each wheel and in the middle can tell a lot about the condition of the car. If you work on the car yourself the corrosion makes it harder to remove bolts, and even things like hose clamps will rust. The exhaust will definitely have to be replaced more often if that is a concern. I also see corrosion on the power steering lines and brake rotors need to be replaced even before they become too worn due to the corrosion. It also matters if your state has stringent state safety inspection, like PA, that will look for things like rust on rotors. Corrosion needn’t affect the longevity of the car if you keep after it.
