3309 and Dexron III are both red, and are both "transmission-y" but aside from those similarities they have different specs and different applications. neither is a substitute for the other.
Flush it out, thoroughly, and use the right stuff. The manufacturer of the transmission (Aisin Warner) and the manufacturer of the cars that use this transmission (Saab, Volvo, Toyota, Lexus, etc) all specify 3309 and none suggest that Dexron is an acceptable substitute.
I'd say that the mechanic should bear the cost of a thorough flush and refill, but that's another story. I think that the important thing is to get the Dexron out and the 3309 in as soon as you can.
