well it does sound like you can rule out coincidental damage to the timing chain and guides.
I "dont think" you'll be able to get an endoscope down from the top to inspect balance chain mechanism. I doubt you could from the bottom either for that matter. It's insanely tight in there. (worth a try though and let us know!)
Dropping the pan as swedecar recommends seems like the best next step ... if you find that the balance chain is loose I think that would confirm the source of the noise.
